Gibraltar, although small, offers a wealth of activities and places to explore in a day. Here is a suggested itinerary to make the most of your visit:
Morning
Rock of Gibraltar
Cable Car to the Top: Start your day by taking the cable car to the top of the Rock. During the climb, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of Gibraltar, the Strait, and, on clear days, even the African coastline.
Rock Nature Reserve: At the top, explore the nature reserve and its points of interest, including:
O’Hara’s Lookout: The highest point in Gibraltar, it offers unparalleled panoramic views.
Gibraltar Monkeys (Barbary Macaques): These friendly inhabitants of the Rock are an iconic attraction. Be careful with your belongings, as they are curious and sometimes mischievous.
St. Michael’s Caves
Visit the Caves: This impressive natural cave has been used as a shelter and hospital in times of war, and is now a tourist attraction. The stalactite and stalagmite formations are spectacular, and concerts are occasionally held inside due to their excellent acoustics.
Great Siege Tunnels
Explore the tunnels: Discover the Great Siege Tunnels, dug during the siege of Gibraltar in the 18th century. Here you will learn about the rich military history of the region, and how these tunnels were instrumental in the defence of Gibraltar.
Midday
Casemates Square
Lunch: Head to Casemates Square, Gibraltar’s main square, where you will find a variety of restaurants and cafes. It is a good place to try the local cuisine, which is a mix of British, Spanish and Moroccan influences.
Relaxation: After lunch, enjoy an outdoor coffee and watch the hustle and bustle of the city.
Afternoon
Main Street
Shopping and Strolling: Main Street is Gibraltar’s main street, lined with duty-free shops, from luxury boutiques to souvenir shops. It is ideal for picking up some gifts or local products.
Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned: As you stroll, visit this 15th-century Catholic cathedral, which is a testament to Gibraltar’s religious history.
Europa Point
Visit Europa Point Lighthouse: This is Gibraltar’s southernmost point, with stunning views of the Strait and, on clear days, North Africa. Also located here is the Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim Mosque, one of the southernmost mosques in Europe, and the Chapel of Our Lady of Europa.
Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim Mosque: A beautiful structure that highlights Gibraltar’s cultural diversity.
Optional
Moorish Castle
Explore the Moorish Castle: If you have time, visit this 8th-century castle, one of the most important examples of Islamic architecture in Gibraltar. It offers a fascinating insight into Gibraltar’s history under Muslim rule.
End of the Day
Dinner
Dinner at Ocean Village Marina: End your day with dinner at one of the restaurants in the modern Ocean Village Marina. This is a lively place with views of the harbour and a wide variety of dining options.
